Inside a Switch Mode NST

This page shows my results in dissecting a switch mode NST (Neon Sign Transformer). The transformer is manufactured by Integral Plus and is rated for 15KV @ 20mA. It's frequency is 20KHz.

The transformer was encased is a solid block of epoxy. To remove the epoxy I submerged the transformer in a hot oil bath. The hot oil softenend the epoxy which allowed me to effectively pull it off. The hotplate was turned upto 280 degrees C and I estimate the oil to have been around 130 degrees C (I was too lazy to measure its temperature). Needless to say using hot oil baths to melt epoxy is very dangerous and should not be attempted. If the oil catches fire you need special fire fighting measures to put it out (DO NOT THROUGH WATER ON AN OIL FIRE).
