I've previously built a large SGTC with good results, but I always felt the noise and weight of the large SGTC put restrictions on how much I could do with it. The large SGTC could really only be used outside which meant lugging around heavy transformers and almost an hour in setup time. The noise of the large SGTC could easily drown out a couple of chainsaws which put a restrictions on what times the large SGTC can be used.
For the reasons mentioned above I've decided to construct a small desktop SGTC which will allow me to carry out various research on SGTC. Using a small SGTC allows for different types of secondary coil and tank capacitor to be tried out. I also plan to build a capactive divider which should allow for accurate measurements of the SGTC output.
